Garda ‘Mid-Summer Tea Party’

On Wednesday 27 June, Gardaí from the Community Policing Units in Limerick City welcomed older members of the community to the inaugural ‘Mid-Summer Tea Party’ at Istabraq Hall. This was the first time that Community Policing units in the city hosted an event of this nature in the mid-year.

Speaking at the event, Chief Superintendent Gerard Roche said, “Events like these are key to community policing and gives An Garda Siochana the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the safety and security of older people in Limerick City. It also allows for the community to engage with each other as well as with their community Garda.”

Sgt Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer was on hand to offer advice in relation to keeping safe in the summer months:

“The Garda Summertime Safety Campaign has some great tips about keeping both yourself and your home safe. Simple things like letting a neighbour or family member know your home will be vacant and to pop in and check on the place can really help. Install timers on internal lights if possible. If you are going on a holiday or short break, make sure the house doesn’t look vacant. Cut the grass, trim the hedges. Ask a neighbour to collect the post.”

Mayor Stephen Keary welcomed all 150 attendees to City Hall for the event saying:

“It was a pleasure to welcome such a wonderful group of older citizens to Istabraq Hall in the most glorious of summer weather and a fantastic opportunity for them all to familiarise themselves with the community Gardaí working in their area. It was also a great social occasion and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves with some thoroughly entertaining dancing and music. I would like to particularly congratulate the Gardaí for hosting such a worthwhile community event.”

Community Policing Units would like to thank all who assisted with the successful running of the event in particular Limerick City and County Council, Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership, Caherdavin and District Credit Union, St. Mary’s Aid, Jean Ryan and Mary O’ Hehir (Community Co-ordinators). Entertainment on the day was kindly provided by the Rogues.
