As part of the investigation, a number of houses were searched on Thursday morning on the northside of Limerick City and a man in his 20s was arrested. The suspect is currently detained at Henry Street Garda Station under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939.
The suspected firearm will now be sent for analysis.
