Man arrested in West Cork over alleged robbery with knife in Limerick

A man who allegedly robbed a woman of cigarettes while armed with a knife in Co Limerick, has been arrested in West Cork.

Gardai travelled from Newcastle West to the Co Cork yesterday, after receiving intelligence about the suspect’s whereabouts.

An informed source said a man allegedly approached a woman who was sitting in a car in the West Limerick town on Monday, showed her he was carrying a knife, and robbed a packet of cigarettes, sources said.

“Gardaí have arrested a man in relation to a robbery in Co. Limerick on January 18, 2021. A woman attended Newcastle West Garda Station where she reported that she had just been subject of a robbery at car park on Sheehan’s Road, Newcastle West at 12.30pm,” said a Garda spokesman.

“She outlined that she had been sitting in her car smoking a cigarette when a man approached her and requested a cigarette.“

“When she refused the man became aggressive and threatened her with what was believed to be a knife. He proceed to grab her cigarettes from the dash board and got into a car which then left the scene.”

“The woman was not harmed during the incident.“

The spokesman said: “Following an investigation by detectives in Newcastle West, a possible suspect was nominated. On January 19 a man, aged in his 30s, was arrested in West Cork by Gardaí from Newcastle West.“

The suspect was brought to Henry Street Garda Station, Limerick city, where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
