WELCOMING the commencement of Oireachtas Committees this week, Sinn Féin senator Joanne Collins expressed her delight at being nominated to both the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Transport.

According to Senator Collins, Sinn Féin is ready to “get down to business and work hard to deliver for workers, families, and communities”.

On the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee, the County Limerick politician said she looks forward to supporting the family-farm model, “taking steps for the traditional backbone of our rural communities to be sustainable in the new agricultural environment”.

“I will use my platform to highlight the often-overlooked issues and sectors within agriculture such as a viable, healthy, and sustainable forestry model, and women’s place in the rural economy,” she said.

Senator Collins says her priorities on the Transport Committee include being a strong voice for infrastructural investment in high level connectivity in the Mid West region, “using our roads, rail, airports, and ports to grow a vibrant economy here and in our neighbouring regions”.

“I will also fight to deliver investment to ensure more frequent and reliable transport and infrastructure across rural areas, connecting towns and villages at times that are most useful to service users.

“I will be working as part of a strong, all-Ireland Sinn Féin team to bring the voices of rural communities, especially in County Limerick, into the Seanad, ensuring the interests of ordinary people are put first, and helping build a better, fairer, united Ireland.

“I will ensure the government are held to account on the issues that matter most to the communities I serve,” she concluded.
