TWO men remained in Garda custody this Wednesday after they were arrested on Tuesday in connection with an assault that led to the death of Scarlett Faulkner at Birdhill last month.

The men, one in his late 40s and the other in his late teens, were being questioned by investigators at Garda stations in County Tipperary.

GardaĆ said they had assigned a liaison officer to Ms Faulkner’s family, of Longpavement, Limerick.

A teenage girl, who is charged before the courts in connection with the assault, is to undergo a psychological evaluation, a court heard.

The girl (16) is accused with assault causing serious harm to Ms Faulkner (29) at the R494 Birdhill, County Tipperary.

She appeared before Nenagh District Court via a video link from a youth detention centre, last Thursday. She did not speak other than to indicate she could hear and see the proceedings.

Her solicitor, Turlough Herbert, indicated that a psychological assessment was being scheduled while she was being detained on remand.

A co-accused in the case, a 40-year-old woman, also appeared on remand before the court by video link from Limerick Prison.

The woman, represented in court by solicitor Pauric Nesbitt, spoke only to confirm she could hear and see the proceedings.

Neither accused can be named because of reporting restrictions imposed by a judge at Limerick District Court.

In Nenagh District Court, Judge Fiona Brennan granted an application by GardaĆ, with the consent of solicitors for both accused, for a four-week adjournment.

The judge said reporting restrictions that were previously imposed remained in place.

Judge Brennan remanded the accused girl and woman in continuing custody, to appear before Nenagh District Court on May 15, for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

GardaĆ previously alleged in court that the accused girl struck Ms Faulkner at least 11 times on the head with an iron bar at the side of the R494 between Birdhill village and the M7 Limerick-Dublin motorway.

GardaĆ also alleged that the girl laughed when they showed her a photo of Ms Faulkner’s injuries.

Ms Faulkner died on April 13 after her life support was turned off at Cork University Hospital the day before.

The mother of one was laid to rest in Meelick, County Clare, on Friday April 17, following her funeral mass held at St Munchin’s Church, Limerick.
