SPEED reduction measures have been sought for Huntsfield in Dooradoyle due to significant speeding in the city estate.

Proposing action at the Metropolitan District meeting of Limerick City and County Council for the month of April, Social Democrats councillor Elisa O’Donovan told Council members that she has had contact from a number of residents regarding this issue.

Speed reduction measures, the Soc Dems councillor said, are now urgently required in Huntsfield to tackle the ongoing problem.

“There’s lots of families living in Huntsfield and it’s something we need sooner rather than later,” Cllr O’Donovan told the monthly meeting.

Fine Gael councillor Daniel Butler told the chamber that agreed with Cllr O’Donovan, citing Huntsfield as a busy estate.

In response to the motion, Limerick City and County Council confirmed that the current 30kmp/h speed limit under the 2020 Jakes Law Byelaws is in place, so a speed limit reduction is not a viable option.

Director of Transport at Limerick City and County Council, Patricia Liddy, told the councillors that “on straight stretches in this estate, traffic calming has been implemented. The layout of the remainder of the estate lends itself to natural traffic calming with short straights, deflection and junctions.”
