LIMERICK City and County Council was quizzed recently about whether inlets from a public road to a farmer’s land can be opened where there is no dyke to carry the surface water.

In response to Fine Gael councillor Liam Galvin’s question, the local authority explained that, yes, inlets can be opened in this situation under Section 76 of the Roads Act 1993.

Senior Executive Engineer at Newcastle West District, Ben Noonan, pointed out that there is an onus on the road authority to manage and maintain road drainage to prevent surface water ponding on public roads.
